Find someone you can relate to

In order to open up and resolve your issues, it is important that you find someone that you can relate to and who can relate to you.  Simply picking someone out of a Google search or from a phone book will not do.  Building a relationship and building an understanding on bout sides will help facilitate any recovery efforts much more easily.

Know what you want to discuss

You want to know what you are going to discuss and what you want to get out of the sessions.  Going to a session that isn’t productive or working towards an end goal is not good for you or the counselor.  When you know what it is you want to discuss then have questions for the doctor and be prepared to answer questions as well.

Medications

Medications are a grey area.  Many people who take medications tend to abuse them or don’t’ use them in the proper manner.  As a result some doctors are hesitant to prescribe medications to their patients.  If you are prescribed medications it is important that you take then as prescribed and don’t abuse them.  Many doctors can lose their license to practice if you abuse your medications simply because they prescribed them to you.

Take your time

The process won’t happen overnight.  You may have to go through two or three before you find one that best fits you.
